There is no doubt that the City Palace Jaipur's history is quite intriguing. It has stood as a witness to several historical events since the era of Jai Singh, whether it is the court meetings or the battles. Over the years, the palace has undergone several reconstructions. However, one thing that remained the same is its architectural semblance.
In the beginning, Jai Singh II focused on erecting the outer wall since it was the main protective boundary. The different buildings and the vast courtyard you see at the present time were added to the architectural map later. What's more surprising is that a Rajput ruler took inspiration from Mughal and European architectural styles and fused them with Indian designs to create such a marvelous building.
It is built with pink and red sandstone, which is why it is also known as the Pink City Palace Jaipur. Its courtyard is colossal, with several small gardens and trees planted around. Apart from the main building, which once was the courtroom and the residence of the king and his family, you can see numerous arched buildings surrounding the courtyard. Standing tall and proud in the courtyard are four small gates inside the City Palace that ultimately leads to the famous Chandra Mahal. According to folklore, it is believed that the four gates are living symbolism of four Hindu gods, namely Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Parvati.
A little inside you will find the Mubarak Mahal that serves the purpose of welcoming guests in the City Palace. Inside is a City Palace museum Jaipur with an outstanding collection of his treasures kept on display. The Chandra Mahal is situated on the western side of the complex, having seven stories which have been named differently as per the purpose. For instance, the second floor is named as Sukh Niwas as its architecture and interior setting has been dedicated to provide calmness and peace to the mind. It is believed that the City Palace Jaipur royal family used to stay at the top floor of Chandra Mahal during monsoon.
Furthermore, the open space is loaded with greeneries, creating a majestic view for the eyes. The trees and foliage are well-maintained throughout the year. There is also a narrow pavement along which you can take a stroll.
